EU-Mercosur Trade Agreement Expected to Provisionally Enter into Force in March

The European Union's free trade agreement with the Mercosur countries (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay) is expected to provisionally enter into force as early as March, following ratification by Paraguay. This was announced by an EU diplomat, despite a recent appeal to the European Court of Justice by MEPs, which could delay the full implementation of the agreement by up to two years. The signing of the agreement, the largest trade deal in the EU's history, took place last Saturday after 25 years of negotiations. The delay in implementation has caused dissatisfaction among businesses, particularly in Germany, and has been criticised by Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Supporters of the agreement emphasize that it is necessary to address the economic impact of US tariffs and to reduce dependence on China. They believe the agreement is fair and balanced and will contribute to European growth. However, critics, led by France, express fears that the agreement will lead to an increase in imports of cheap beef, sugar, and poultry, undermining local farmers. The appeal to the European Court of Justice concerns the validity of the agreement before its full ratification and the potential restriction of the EU's ability to enact policies for the environment and consumer health.
