Farmers Allege Water Diverted to Golf Courses While Agriculture Suffers

The Union of Cypriot Farmers (EKA) is protesting that water from dams is being diverted to golf courses and tourist accommodations, while farmers are seeing their supplies reduced or cut off. The EKA warns that this policy is leading to the economic ruin of the agricultural community and a decline in domestic production, jeopardizing Cyprus's food security. The organization calls on the government and the Minister of Agriculture to immediately convene the Agricultural Advisory Committee, with the participation of agricultural organizations, to find solutions to the problem. The EKA emphasizes that farmers are in despair and that the ultimate cost of this policy will be passed on to consumers through rising food prices. The EKA stresses that ensuring food self-sufficiency is vital for a semi-occupied country like Cyprus, as dependence on imports puts the country itself at risk.
