Financial Times: "Christine Lagarde Receives €726,000, But the ECB Only Publishes €466,000"

Revelations by the Financial Times regarding the salary of Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), are causing reactions. According to the report, Lagarde received a total of €726,000 in 2024, while the ECB publishes only €466,000, which is 56% less. The difference is due to allowances and her remuneration for her position at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). The FT analysis highlights the limited transparency regarding actual remuneration at the ECB. Lagarde receives approximately €135,000 in allowances and €125,000 for her participation on the BIS board. In contrast, the Chairman of the US Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, does not receive remuneration for his role at the BIS due to US law. Lagarde's salary is almost four times higher than Powell's, which is capped at $203,000 (€172,720). Even Lagarde's basic salary is the highest among EU officials, exceeding the salary of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, by 21%. The publication suggests a trend within the EU to align the remuneration of top executives with that of large private companies. Lagarde's total remuneration, although high, is considered “moderate” compared to the income of executive officers of large companies in the EU.
