Firefighter Awarded Damages for Gender Discrimination in Cyprus

A female firefighter in Cyprus has won a case of gender discrimination at the Labour Disputes Court. The case concerned her lack of training on new airport firefighting vehicles and the provision of firefighting boots that were three sizes too large. The court ruled that the firefighter had suffered direct discrimination and awarded her damages with interest dating back to 2014. This decision sets a precedent for Cyprus, as it is the first time damages have been awarded to a firefighter for this reason. During the hearing, the court made observations regarding the behaviour of certain members of the Fire Service. The claimant had argued that she faced oppressive behaviour from a colleague and that her transfer to the airport was done without the necessary approvals, causing her financial burden. The case also involved disciplinary proceedings against two members of the Fire Service, with one ultimately being acquitted.
