First Dose of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccine Completed for 65,000 Cattle in Occupied Territories

The first dose of vaccination has been completed for approximately 65,000 cattle in the occupied territories, as part of efforts to contain the foot-and-mouth disease. The process was carried out by around 30 veterinary teams, and the second dose is expected to be administered in 21-30 days. The Turkish Cypriot 'veterinary association' emphasized that the measures taken by the 'authorities' are binding and warned of legal liabilities for those who do not comply. At the same time, the need for immediate vaccination of sheep and goats was highlighted to prevent further spread of the virus. However, the 'veterinary association' also recorded complaints about the poor implementation of measures by 'local authorities', with reports of underfunctioning disinfection points and a lack of materials. Particular concern was expressed regarding the import of agricultural vehicles and equipment from Turkey, where foot-and-mouth disease is on the rise. The Turkish Cypriot veterinarians called on the 'authorities' to intensify controls at entry points and left open the possibility of restricting commercial activities if deemed necessary to protect livestock.
