The Pediatric Clinic of Makarios Hospital is experiencing increased demand, with an 80% occupancy rate, due to the high activity of seasonal infections. Five children are hospitalized with the flu, while one infant is in the pediatric intensive care unit with RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus). Dr. Elena Papamichael, Head of the Department, stated that the situation was expected and that the children hospitalized with the flu are in stable condition, with a prospect of improvement without further medical intervention. Authorities anticipate a further increase in cases in the coming days, as viral infections and seasonal flu usually peak in January and February. The pediatric team at Makarios Hospital is on standby and in communication with other hospitals of the Cyprus Public Health Services (CPHS) to manage any additional cases. The contribution of pediatricians is crucial, and parents are urged to seek immediate medical advice and medication as soon as their children show symptoms. It is also recommended that children be confined to their homes and avoid going to school if they are sick. The importance of vaccinations for high-risk groups and children, regarding the seasonal flu and RSV vaccines, is emphasized. At the same time, basic personal hygiene measures are reminded and the avoidance of gatherings in environments with increased viral presence, in order to limit their spread and avoid further burdening the healthcare system.
