Former President Giorgos Vassiliou Passes Away

Former President of the Republic of Cyprus, Giorgos Vassiliou, passed away at the age of 94 after being hospitalized at the General Hospital of Nicosia. The news of his death was announced by his wife, Androulla Vassiliou, via a post on X. Giorgos Vassiliou served as President from 1988 to 1993, succeeding Spyros Kyprianou. During his term, he promoted significant reforms, such as submitting Cyprus' application for membership in the European Union, tax reform, and tourism development. After leaving office, he founded the Movement of Free Democrats, which later joined the United Democrats. The loss of Giorgos Vassiliou is a significant loss for Cyprus.
