France: Over 1,000 Cars Burned on New Year's Eve, Over 400 Arrested

Over 1,000 cars were burned and over 400 people were arrested in France on New Year's Eve. Despite an increase in the number of vehicles set on fire compared to the previous year (1,173 versus 984), the Ministry of the Interior announced that the night was “calmer” with “limited urban unrest”. A total of 403 arrests were made, following 505 detentions. In Paris, 125 people were arrested on charges including violence, property damage, and drug possession. Approximately 90,000 police officers and gendarmes were mobilized for the security of the celebrations.
