France Plans Ban on Social Media for Children Under 15

France is planning to ban access to social media for children under 15 years old, as part of a broader effort to protect young people from the negative effects of excessive screen time. The proposal, backed by President Macron, is based on studies highlighting risks such as exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and sleep disturbances. The draft law includes two articles: one concerning the ban on access to social media platforms for minors under 15, and the other banning the use of mobile phones in middle and high schools. Australia has already taken a similar step, imposing a ban on social media for children under 16. The French government emphasizes that this legislation aims to address growing concerns about the mental and physical health of adolescents affected by excessive internet use. A previous ban on mobile phone use in some schools was implemented in 2018, but its enforcement was limited. The new draft law appears to have greater weight and support from the government. The discussion of the bill is expected to begin in January in parliament, with the aim of passing it by next September.
