Friends of Akamas Express Concern Over Road Network Redesign

The Environmental and Cultural Organization “Friends of Akamas” expresses strong concerns regarding the progress of the redesign of the road network within Akamas National Forest Park. The organization points out that the initial designs were unsuitable and out of place, resulting in the suspension of the works in 2023 with presidential intervention. Despite successive evaluations and the terms set by the Environmental Authority for the restoration of environmental damage, the organization reports that it has not been informed of any developments. It highlights the abandonment of construction sites, the construction of unnecessary bridges and walls, and the destruction of watercourses. The “Friends of Akamas” accuse the competent state departments of a lack of willingness to address the problems of the area holistically and of the absence of a comprehensive plan for the road network. They believe that the network should be of a forest nature and serve the management of the park and access for visitors by alternative means of transport. The organization emphasizes the need for sustainable development of the area, worthy of its unique natural beauty, and expresses its disappointment at the continued degradation of Akamas.
