From the South Pole's -30°C to Space Missions – A Cypriot Doctor's Unique Journey

Cypriot doctor Vasilis Mavratsas shared his experience from a two-month stay in Antarctica and the South Pole, where he provided medical care in challenging conditions. The mission was part of his training in Space Medicine, as he pursues his dream of becoming an astronaut. He faced extreme temperatures (-30°C), consumed decades-old frozen food, and cared for patients with limited equipment. This experience, in an isolated and white landscape, helped him adapt to conditions similar to those in space. Mavratsas was born in Larnaca, grew up in Nicosia, and studied Chemistry and Medicine in Texas, where he continues his specialization in Space Medicine, close to NASA facilities and other space companies. The mission to Antarctica was an opportunity to apply his medical knowledge in an environment that simulates the challenges of space exploration.
