GBL Found in Water Cooler in Larnaca, One Dead and Four Hospitalized

A 78-year-old man has died and four people are hospitalized in serious condition at the General Hospital of Larnaca after consuming water from a water cooler containing the substance GBL (gamma-Butyrolactone). The State Chemistry has confirmed the presence of the substance in the water, and the results of toxicological tests from the autopsy are also expected. Police are investigating how the substance ended up in the water cooler, taking statements from the family's circle. The case is considered delicate and the possibility of criminal activity is being investigated, with emphasis on the fact that the deceased's son is on trial for drug offenses. One of the hospitalized patients has been extubated and the clinical picture of the patients is improving.
