Geopolitics is Not a Space for Sentimentality

The phone call between President Christodoulides and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Zelenskyy's upcoming visit to Nicosia for the start of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, are considered a diplomatic success for Cyprus. However, there is criticism regarding Zelenskyy's lack of explicit reference to the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus, as well as his failure to publicly equate the Ukrainian crisis with the Cypriot one. The article argues that foreign policy should be based on realism, given that Turkey is a critical factor for Ukraine, providing access to the Black Sea, drones, and mediation with Russia. Zelenskyy's visit to Cyprus is interpreted as recognition of Cyprus's role as an 'honest broker' within the EU and as a bridge of stability in the region. Cyprus, in turn, emphasizes its shared experience as a victim of invasion, which is accepted by Kyiv.
