Gerapetritis: New Extension of Territorial Waters Coming - 'Cyprus is Under Hybrid Attack'

Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis assured that Greece will proceed with a further extension of its territorial waters, without compromising on sovereignty issues, characterizing sovereignty as a 'red line'. He emphasized that this extension is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Greek sovereignty, as demonstrated by previous actions such as the extension of the territorial sea to 12 nautical miles and agreements with Italy and Egypt. Mr. Gerapetritis highlighted the long-standing and major priority of Greek foreign policy towards Cyprus, stating that Greece stands by the Republic of Cyprus, which, in his view, is also under hybrid attack. He also supported the UN initiatives for a fair solution to the Cyprus issue, based on the resolutions of the Security Council. Furthermore, the Foreign Minister referred to the importance of the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection, describing it as a strategically important project for lifting the energy isolation of Cyprus and the stability of the region. He reiterated that sovereignty issues will not be discussed with Turkey, as the Greek position is that the only issue to be submitted to international arbitration is the delimitation of the EEZ and continental shelf. Mr. Gerapetritis dismissed the opposition's accusations of 'dangerous timidity and silence', arguing that the government has already taken significant measures to safeguard Greek sovereignty, such as maritime spatial planning and the creation of marine parks. He expressed confidence that other actions will follow, such as the extension of territorial waters and the creation of Marine Park 2.
