Giant Underwater Volcano Expected to Erupt in 2026

Scientists estimate that the underwater volcano Axial Seamount, in the Pacific Ocean, will erupt around mid to late 2026. The volcano, known for its intense activity, is showing increased seismicity and uplift of the seafloor, signs indicating an impending eruption. During an underwater eruption, lava cools rapidly forming 'pillow' structures, while the heat enhances hydrothermal activity. Caldera collapses after eruptions have been measured in several meters. However, scientists emphasize that a widespread collapse of the volcano's flanks and the triggering of a tsunami are highly unlikely. The volcano is not considered an immediate threat to human life due to its great depth.
