Gift of Life to 5 Patients from 50-Year-Old at Papageorgiou Hospital

A 50-year-old man, who was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of Papageorgiou Hospital, became an organ donor after his brain death was confirmed. His family gave their consent for the donation, offering a gift of life to five patients. The donor's heart was transported to the Transplantation Center in Turin to be transplanted to a patient there. The kidneys and liver were removed by a surgical team from Hippokrateio Hospital in Thessaloniki and transplanted to compatible recipients. The corneas were taken by the transplantation team of the Second University Ophthalmology Clinic of Papageorgiou and will be used for transplants in other hospitals. The administration of Papageorgiou Hospital expressed its condolences to the donor's family and thanked them for their courageous decision. It also thanked all the medical teams involved in the process. The incident highlights the importance of organ donation, and the hospital administration appeals to citizens to support this effort, so that the number of donors increases and more lives are saved.
