Government Employment in Cyprus Reaches 55,301 with Slight Annual Increase

Government employment in Cyprus reached 55,301 individuals in December 2025, marking a slight increase of 0.1% compared to December 2024. This growth is primarily attributed to an increase in permanent staff, while hourly-paid staff experienced a decrease. At the service level, the Education Service recorded a 1.8% increase in employment, while the Public Service and Security Forces saw declines of 0.9% and 0.4% respectively. The significant reduction in fixed-term contract employees (EOX) within the Security Forces (-74.0%) is due to the completion and non-extension of specific temporary contracts in July 2025. Specifically, the largest percentage increase was observed among indefinite-term contract workers in the Education Service (23.5%), while the largest decrease was recorded among EOX in the Security Forces (-74.0%). The average total government employment for the period January – December 2025 increased by 0.6% compared to the same period in 2024, indicating a general, albeit small, positive trend in employment.
