Government Spokesperson Addresses Incident in Mammari and Prison Overcrowding

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis addressed two significant issues: the recent incident in the buffer zone in Mammari and the overcrowding in the Central Prisons. Regarding Mammari, he described the incident as “obvious” and part of Turkey’s consistent tactic of challenging and disrupting the status of the buffer zone. Mr. Letymbiotis emphasized that the government took immediate action, informing farmers and communicating with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force and the Cypriot Representation in New York. He reminded that the report of the UN Secretary-General is expected soon and that such actions cannot be ignored. Furthermore, he referred to the events in Pyla, where the Peacekeeping Force directly experienced Turkey’s aggressive behavior. He stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in constant contact with the relevant services and local communities. Regarding the overcrowding in the Central Prisons, Mr. Letymbiotis acknowledged that it is a major challenge due to the outdated infrastructure and the difficulty of implementing international protocols. The deportation or voluntary return of foreign prisoners is being considered as a measure to address the issue.
