Greece to Further Extend Territorial Waters, Firmly Supports Cyprus

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis assured that Greece will continue to extend its territorial waters, without making any concessions on sovereignty issues, emphasizing that sovereignty is a “red line” and is not negotiable with Turkey. Speaking in Parliament, he stated that the extension of territorial waters is part of a strategy to strengthen Greek sovereignty, as demonstrated by the extension of the territorial sea, agreements with Italy and Egypt, and maritime spatial planning. He also expressed firm support for Cyprus, which, according to him, is facing a hybrid attack, and highlighted the importance of the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection for the energy security of the region. Mr. Gerapetritis reiterated that sovereignty issues will not be discussed with Turkey, but only the delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the continental shelf.
