Greek Airspace Closed: No Landings or Takeoffs

Published January 4, 2026, 10:24

A significant technical issue with the central radio frequency systems of the Athens and Macedonia Area Control Centers under the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority has led to the closure of Greek airspace. This means all flights to and from Greece have been halted, including departures and arrivals from the country's major and regional airports. Authorities are working intensively to restore the problem, and an official announcement is expected from the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA), as well as the closure of the Athens FIR. Currently, only flights already in the air are being serviced. The situation is causing significant flight delays and cancellations, affecting thousands of travelers.
