Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot Designers Unite for Sustainable Fashion and Cypriot Tradition

Published January 6, 2026, 09:24

A bicommunal team of ten young designers in Cyprus is joining forces to create sustainable fashion, inspired by Cypriot tradition and cultural heritage. The 'Crafting Continuity' exhibition, organized by the Fashion Heritage Network Cyprus, showcased their pieces, which combine traditional techniques with modern design. The designers collaborated with artisans to learn traditional techniques, such as the embroidery of Lapithos and weaving. This process was not only educational but also emotional, as the artisans passed on their knowledge from generation to generation, creating a sense of connection with the past. This initiative is particularly important for Turkish Cypriot designers, as it gives them the opportunity to preserve and promote their culture. Greek Cypriot designers, on the other hand, are inspired by elements such as the vrakades and tsoliades, incorporating them into their creations. The designers use materials such as silk cocoons and create designs inspired by nature and local culture. This exhibition is an effort to highlight the value of Cypriot tradition and encourage new generations to invest in it.
