Greek FM: Cyprus is Under Hybrid Attack, Further Territorial Waters Expansion Planned

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis assured Parliament that Greece will proceed with the expansion of its territorial waters without compromising on sovereignty issues with Turkey. Sovereignty was characterized as a “red line” and non-negotiable. Mr. Gerapetritis emphasized the importance of supporting Cyprus, which he believes is under a “hybrid attack,” and highlighted Greece's active support for UN initiatives on the Cyprus issue. He also referred to the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection as a strategically important project for the energy stability of the region. The Foreign Minister clarified that sovereignty issues will not be discussed with Turkey, insisting that the only issue that can be brought before international jurisdiction is the delimitation of the EEZ and continental shelf. He rejected opposition accusations of “timidity,” stating that marine parks and maritime spatial planning strengthen Greek sovereignty. He announced further expansions, such as the creation of Marine Park 2. Regarding the Greek-Turkish dialogue, Mr. Gerapetritis stated that it will focus on bilateral relations and the positions of the two countries in the world. He reiterated Greece's longstanding support for Cyprus and efforts for a fair solution to the Cyprus problem based on UN resolutions. The Foreign Minister's statement underscores Greece's firm stance on defending its sovereign rights and supporting Cyprus, while also leaving open the possibility of dialogue with Turkey on other issues.
