Greek Minister Calls for Coordinated European Response to Housing Crisis

The Minister of Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, emphasized the need for a coordinated European response to the growing housing crisis, characterizing it as a broad social issue with significant impacts on social cohesion, economic resilience, and demographic development. He highlighted that access to affordable and decent housing is essential for attracting and retaining workers, supporting families, and strengthening Europe's competitiveness. The Cypriot presidency will promote four pillars for affordable housing: increasing supply, mobilizing investment, supporting citizens, and protecting vulnerable households. Furthermore, the pressure exerted by short-term rentals, such as Airbnbs, on the housing market was acknowledged, leading to rising prices and limited options for the local population. The government has already taken steps to reduce licensing time and provide incentives for developers to create affordable housing.
