Green Dot: The Path to 'Green' Leadership

Published January 8, 2026, 11:28

Green Dot Cyprus has undergone a significant journey since 2003, evolving from a response to a legal obligation into a crucial environmental responsibility institution. It has developed into a nationwide recycling system serving approximately 90% of the population and supported by over 1,700 businesses. According to General Manager Marios Vrachimis, the system faces challenges such as high operating costs, incorrect sorting of recyclables, lack of infrastructure, and the issue of 'free riders' (businesses that do not participate in the system). Despite these difficulties, Green Dot has successfully fostered a recycling culture in Cyprus, contributing to environmental protection and sustainable waste management. The organization continues to invest in public education and infrastructure improvements. The vision of Green Dot for the future is full integration into the circular economy and transforming recycling from a mere obligation into an automatic daily practice for all citizens. This requires continuous effort, innovation, and collaboration with all stakeholders.
