EU Boosts Critical Infrastructure and Services in Ukraine

The European Union is stepping up its support for Ukraine as over a million people are left without essential services like electricity, water, and heating due to continued Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure. The European Commission has mobilized 447 emergency generators, worth €3.7 million, from the EU's strategic reserves to restore power to hospitals, shelters, and other critical services. The generators will be distributed through the Ukrainian Ministry of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development and the Ukrainian Red Cross. Since the start of the Russian invasion, the EU has sent around 10,000 generators to Ukraine through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). In addition, the transfer of a complete thermal power plant from Lithuania has been completed, a significant operation to restore electricity to the Ukrainian grid. Total humanitarian aid to Ukraine since the start of the invasion exceeds €1.2 billion, with the delivery of over 160,000 tons of materials, including solid fuels, heating appliances, and other essential items. At the same time, at least €3 billion has been allocated to Ukraine's energy security. For the winter, the EU has mobilized €927 million for emergency gas purchases, while electricity export capacity is at a maximum level. The European Commission is committed to continuing to support Ukraine in addressing energy challenges and strengthening its resilience.
