“Hell on Earth”: Inside the Brooklyn Jail Holding Nicolás Maduro

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is being held in a notorious detention complex in Brooklyn, known as “hell on earth” due to the appalling conditions. The Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) has housed many well-known defendants in the past. The jail, which holds approximately 1,600 inmates, has faced strong criticism for its poor living conditions. It has been described as “inhumane” and “hell on earth” by various organizations. Among the inmates who have passed through the MDC are Ghislaine Maxwell, Sean “Diddy” Combs, and R. Kelly. Maduro was arrested by the United States on Saturday and will appear in court on Monday. He is accused of being the leader of the Cartel de Las Soles, a drug trafficking organization allegedly linked to the military and political elite of Venezuela. His wife and son were also arrested along with him. The MDC jail serves as a kind of intermediate station for inmates awaiting trial or sentencing. The conditions of detention are particularly difficult and have raised concerns about the health and safety of inmates.
