Herodotou: Cyprus – France Battle for the Presidency of the European Banking Authority

Konstantinos Herodotou, a former central banker of Cyprus, is in the final two for the presidency of the European Banking Authority (EBA). His opponent is the Frenchman Francois-Louis Michaud, the current executive director of the EBA. The selection will be made in the coming days, after three rounds of evaluations. Mr. Herodotou's advancement to the final stage is a significant success for Cyprus, as he is the first Cypriot to come so close to a leadership position in a European banking organization. He is highly regarded by central bankers in the Eurozone and institutional bodies. France already holds leadership positions in the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Single Resolution Board (SRB), making the outcome of the battle for the presidency of the EBA uncertain. The election of a Cypriot would signal the rise of individuals from smaller states to important positions in the EU.
