How Aldrich Ames Sold Out CIA Secrets to the USSR: The Alcohol, Debt, and Betrayal That Shocked the US

In 1994, the revelation of Aldrich Ames, a high-ranking CIA official who spied for the USSR, shocked the United States. Ames, known as “The Bell” by the KGB, confessed to betraying more than 30 agents working with the West, jeopardizing over 100 secret operations. His betrayal led to the execution of at least ten CIA sources, including Dmitri Polyakov, a key Soviet officer who had provided information to the West for over 20 years. Ames' position as head of the CIA's Soviet counterintelligence department gave him access to classified information, allowing him to cause immense damage to US intelligence services. The reasons behind his betrayal included financial problems and disillusionment with American foreign policy.
