Nicolás Maduro appeared in US court, denying the charges of narco-terrorism and stating that he is innocent and remains the legitimate president of Venezuela. His wife, Cilia Flores, who is also charged, also declared her innocence and referred to herself as the “first lady of Venezuela.” Maduro’s lawyer, Barry Pollack, hinted that he would challenge the legality of Maduro’s arrest and transfer to the US, as well as his role as head of state. The charges include conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, cocaine importation, and possession of weapons. The next hearing is scheduled for March 17.
