‘I Was Just Joking’ Says Rama About Statements Regarding Greeks and ‘Descendants of Plato’

The Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, responded to reactions caused by his statements about Greeks during an international conference in Abu Dhabi. Specifically, he had stated that “you Greeks think you have a monopoly on philosophy” and “you always underestimate others.” Rama argued that his statements were made in jest and misinterpreted by some Greek media, characterizing the reaction as “nationalistic.” He emphasized his respect for ancient Greek culture and Greek philosophers, as well as the fraternal relationship between the two peoples. Furthermore, Rama expressed his surprise at the extent to which his statements were received, while stating that it should not be assumed that anyone who speaks Greek is a descendant of Plato and Aristotle. His post on X (formerly Twitter) was accompanied by a photo and a statement in English and Albanian.
