Images of Abandonment at Akamas National Forest Park, Claim 'Friends of Akamas'

The environmental group 'Friends of Akamas' reports scenes of abandonment and ongoing environmental degradation in the Akamas Peninsula, due to the endless delay in redesigning the road network. Despite a presidential intervention 15 months ago to halt the projects, procedures remain stagnant, leaving the area exposed to carelessness. According to the organization, a recent inspection revealed incomplete constructions, open construction sites in the mud, and damage to the natural landscape. Specifically, they mention 'unnecessary culvert-type bridges' that block stream beds, metal reinforcements corroding from moisture, and unsightly walls that distort the terrain. 'Friends of Akamas' attribute the situation to the lack of political will for holistic ecosystem management and the absence of a scientifically sound redesign that prioritizes alternative modes of transport. They also express regret over the abandonment of the vision to declare the area a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The organization emphasizes that sporadic movements lead to waste of resources and disastrous consequences, especially at a time when Cyprus is assuming the Presidency of the Council of the EU. They demand immediate action to protect the unique natural environment of Akamas.
