Independent Support Authority Under Fire After Corruption Video – Abolition Bill Proposed

The Independent Social Support Authority is once again facing scrutiny following the release of a video showing conversations with potential investors regarding large financial contributions for corporate social responsibility. AKEL is proposing a bill to abolish the Authority, suggesting its reserves be transferred to the Cyprus State Scholarships Foundation (IKYK), believing that IKYK can offer scholarships based on income criteria. This proposal will be discussed by the House Institutions Committee. Meanwhile, DISY, through its president Annita Dimitriou, is calling for a political decision to disclose the Authority's contributions, expressing anger and disappointment at the lack of transparency. Ms. Dimitriou emphasizes the need for accountability, investigation, and drastic changes to the Authority's operation to avoid further scandal. Diko agrees with the need to disclose donors, in order to avoid any unconstitutional legislation that may be required to achieve transparency. It is noted that previous legislation to disclose the Authority's sponsors had been deemed unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court. The issue has sparked strong reactions and discussions regarding transparency, accountability, and the ethics of political figures involved in the Authority's operation. Abolishing the Authority and transferring its funds to IKYK is seen as a possible solution to the problems that have arisen.
