India on Alert for Deadly Bat-Origin Virus: Fears of New Covid-19 Pandemic

Health authorities in India are on high alert due to the emergence of cases of the Nipah virus, a deadly virus transmitted by bats. The first cases were detected in West Bengal, near Kolkata, and 20 people considered high-risk have already been quarantined. The Nipah virus has a high mortality rate (40-75%) and causes severe respiratory problems, brain inflammation, and coma. There is no available treatment or vaccine for the virus, which heightens fears of a potential new pandemic, similar to Covid-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for urgent research and vaccine development for the virus.
