The U.S. Department of Justice announced an indictment against Nicolás Maduro, his wife Cilia Flores, his son Nicolás Maduro Guerra, and other Venezuelan officials. The charges allege that for over 25 years, Venezuelan leaders abused their public positions to import tons of cocaine into the United States, with Maduro at the forefront of this corruption. According to the indictment, Maduro provided diplomatic passports to drug traffickers and diplomatic cover to planes used for money laundering. His associates are accused of collaborating with violent drug dealers and narco-terrorists for personal gain. Flores is charged with accepting bribes to mediate a meeting between a major drug trafficker and the director of Venezuela's National Anti-Drug Service in 2007. Furthermore, the indictment states that Maduro and Flores ordered kidnappings, beatings, and murders against individuals who owed them drug money or otherwise undermined their operations, including the murder of a local drug baron in Caracas. Maduro is charged with conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, cocaine importation, and weapons possession, while Flores is charged with conspiracy to import cocaine and weapons possession.
