Infant with RSV Hospitalized – Experts Raise Concerns

There has been an increase in the number of children hospitalized with seasonal viruses at the Makarios Hospital, with six children currently in the pediatric ward. Five of them have influenza A, while a 17-day-old infant is hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). The health condition of the children is generally good, however, the director of the pediatric clinic states that the increase in viral infections is expected during this period. The hospitalization of the 17-day-old infant with RSV in the ICU was necessary, but his condition is improving and he no longer requires non-invasive mechanical ventilation or oxygen therapy. The increase in RSV cases has been limited due to the timely vaccination carried out in recent months. The occupancy rate of the pediatric clinic is 80%, but healthcare professionals state that they can manage all cases. Experts are raising concerns about the need to adhere to health protection measures and vaccinations against seasonal influenza and RSV. It is recommended that children exhibiting symptoms of viral infections, such as fever, severe runny nose, or prolonged cough, remain at home until fully recovered to prevent further spread of the virus.
