Inflation to Persist in Greece with Rising Food and Service Costs

Inflation is expected to continue in 2026, with increases in basic food and service costs. Meat, fruits, vegetables, coffee, cocoa, rents, transportation, home repairs, and health insurance are expected to put upward pressure on inflation. In December 2025, the harmonized index of consumer prices in Greece rose to 2.9%, while in the Eurozone it fell to 2%. Food price increases are due to international factors and climate change, while meat prices are due to domestic market shortages. Pressures on rents and transportation are difficult to manage. The government is trying to address the problem through agreements with supermarkets for fixed prices and transparent pricing of fresh produce.
