Interior Minister: Coordinated European Response Needed to Housing Crisis

The Minister of Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, emphasized the need for a coordinated European response to the housing crisis during a briefing for journalists accredited in Brussels who are visiting Cyprus. He characterized the housing crisis as a major social issue with a broad impact. The Minister stated that lack of access to affordable housing affects social cohesion, economic resilience, demographic developments, and public trust in institutions. He pointed out that addressing the housing crisis is an investment in the future of Europe. The Cypriot presidency will promote four pillars for affordable housing: increasing supply, mobilizing investment, supporting citizens, and protecting vulnerable households. In addition, the pressure exerted by short-term rentals on the market was acknowledged. The Minister presented the strategy for drastically reducing licensing time, which has been reduced from one and a half years to 40-80 working days. He also referred to the incentives provided to builders to create affordable housing.
