Invalid Mysteries: Cypriot Church Disavows Practices of Dismissed Monks

Published January 7, 2026, 12:26

The Church of Cyprus has announced that any sacraments and religious rites performed by the dismissed monks of the Holy Monastery of Osios Avvakoum in Fterikoudi are invalid. Archbishop Georgios emphasized that the state cannot intervene, but it is important to inform the public about the invalid nature of these practices. This decision comes after discussions regarding the continuation of services by the former monks, despite their dismissal. Archbishop Georgios stated that wearing monastic robes does not grant validity to the performed rites, noting: “Whoever wears a uniform says it is their right, and they don’t take off their robes.” The Church’s priority is to protect the faithful from practices not recognized by it. This case has sparked debate about the limits of ecclesiastical jurisdiction and the need for transparency towards the faithful. The Church seeks to prevent the misleading of the public and ensure that religious practices are carried out in accordance with its regulations. The issue is expected to be discussed in detail at tomorrow's meeting of the Holy Synod, with the aim of determining the best strategy for informing the public and avoiding further misunderstandings. The Church of Cyprus reaffirms its firm position regarding the validity of sacraments and religious rites performed by legitimate members.
