Israel to Install Laser Interception System on Fighter Jets

Israel is developing a new high-powered laser interception system, Iron Beam, which will operate alongside its existing Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow defense systems. The system, manufactured by Elbit Systems and Rafael, has already been delivered to the Israeli army and has demonstrated its ability to intercept various threats, such as rockets, mortar shells, aircraft, and drones, at a significantly lower cost than conventional systems. Estimates suggest that the cost of intercepting a drone with the laser is around $4, compared to the much higher cost of Israel's existing missile defense systems. Daniel Gold, head of research and development at the Ministry of Defense, announced that work is underway to develop an even more powerful version of the laser, capable of handling a wider range of threats. The vision is for aircraft to be able to carry the system and intercept threats above the clouds. Israeli President Isaac Herzog described the system as a "fundamental change in the world of warfare," both in defense and offense. Daniel Gold, known as the architect of Israel's Iron Dome system, is also leading this new initiative. Iron Beam is expected to significantly enhance Israel's defensive capabilities, offering a cost-effective and efficient solution to counter growing threats.
