Journalist in the Philippines Convicted of 'Terror Funding'

A journalist in the Philippines, Frencie Mae Cubio, has been convicted of 'terror funding' and, along with her former roommate, Mariel Domocil, faces a minimum prison sentence of 12 years and 5 months, with a maximum of 18 years and 8 months. The case has drawn strong criticism from press freedom and human rights organizations, who describe it as politically motivated. Cubio had been detained for six years and was initially charged with illegal possession of firearms, for which she was acquitted. She was later charged with funding terrorism. The UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression has described the process as a 'parody of justice' and argued that the charges were brought in retaliation for her journalistic work.
