Kassianidou: “Culture Could Have More Support”

The Deputy Minister of Culture, Vasiliki Kassianidou, spoke on the Tsouroullis Uncensored podcast about the professional recognition of artists and the support of culture in Cyprus. She admitted that the profession of artist is not recognized, but emphasized that the bill for the status of the artist has been submitted to the Parliament, but has not yet progressed. The Deputy Minister acknowledged the historical lack of support for the cultural sector, but expressed the view that the creation of the Deputy Ministry of Culture has given new impetus and opportunities. She highlighted the importance of cultural education and the implementation of educational programs for children in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. A key issue she raised was the repatriation of antiquities, which is a top priority. The Deputy Minister described the organized mechanism that has been created, with digitization and monitoring of international auctions, which has led to successful returns of antiquities to Cyprus. Finally, she characterized the illegal trafficking of antiquities as an international problem, which will be put on the European agenda during the Cypriot Presidency.
