Key Achievements of George Vassiliou: A Former Minister's Perspective

Andreas Philippou, a former Minister of Education in George Vassiliou's government, highlighted the most significant achievements of his administration, emphasizing the consensual policy he pursued. George Vassiliou was elected President without party affiliation, managing to garner support from different political parties in each round of the elections. Vassiliou's consensual policy led to unanimous decisions in the National Council in 1989, an event that Philippou considers crucial for resolving the Cyprus issue. He believes that if DISY had not agreed with DIKO to support Glavkos Klerides in 1992, Vassiliou would have been re-elected and would have increased the chances of a Cyprus settlement. Philippou also stressed the equality of opportunity that prevailed during Vassiliou's government, as appointments to government positions were not based on party preferences. He himself was appointed Minister of Education without personally knowing President Vassiliou, due to his publications on the need to establish a university in Cyprus. One of the most important achievements of the Vassiliou government was the submission of a bill to establish the University of Cyprus in 1988, which was unanimously passed in 1989. In addition, efforts were initiated to create a State Scholarship Foundation, although this was not completed during his term, but was passed later, in 1997.
