Kurdish Fighters Withdraw from Aleppo After Clashes

Kurdish fighters besieged by the Syrian army in two neighborhoods of Aleppo will withdraw to the autonomous Kurdish zone in northeastern Syria, Syrian authorities announced today. A ceasefire in the Kurdish neighborhoods had been announced earlier, with a deadline for the withdrawal of fighters until this morning. Clashes between Kurds and the Syrian army began on Tuesday and have resulted in the deaths of at least 21 people. These are the most serious hostilities to have occurred in Aleppo between the Islamist authorities and the Kurds, who control large areas in northeastern Syria and some neighborhoods of Aleppo. Members of the Syrian security forces entered the Ashrafieh Kurdish neighborhood with vehicles to facilitate the withdrawal of fighters and some civilians. Local authorities in Aleppo announced that elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) would be transferred with their personal weapons. The Kurds have not yet confirmed the withdrawal agreement. These clashes broke out amid efforts to implement the March agreement, which provides for the integration of Kurdish institutions and the SDF into the Syrian state.
