Licensing Authority Calls for Cancellation of Taxi Mobilizations

The Cyprus Licensing Authority has expressed concern regarding the announced strike actions by taxi federations and has called on the Pan-Cypriot Federation of Urban Taxis (POAT) to cancel them, warning of negative impacts on the economy, tourism, and the country's international image. The Authority clarifies that it does not have operational responsibility but acts as a mediator to strengthen legality. It has already implemented control measures at airports, such as suspending entry for those violating terms and setting time limits for pre-bookings (vouchers). Furthermore, the Licensing Authority emphasizes the need for institutional changes, including amending legislation and establishing mediation services with criminal liabilities for those assisting in illegal practices, as well as revising the regulations for taxi passage and parking at airports. These changes require time, cooperation, and coordination. The Nicosia Taxi Association has expressed its support for the taxi drivers in Larnaca, agreeing with the reasons for the mobilizations and pointing out that the problems are not limited to one province. The Association blames the surge in piracy by unlicensed private drivers, unfair competition from ride-sharing apps that do not comply with the headquarters legislation, and the lack of effectiveness from the authorities. It calls for strict enforcement of the laws, protection of the legal profession, and resolution of long-standing issues, emphasizing the need for substantial and systematic control, beyond administrative arrangements such as vouchers. The Association states that it will remain at the side of its colleagues to address these problems.
