Cyprus has officially assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union with a ceremony held at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre. President Nikos Christodoulides and the First Lady welcomed heads of state, government officials, and representatives of European institutions. Guests included the Secretary-General of the Arab League, the Presidents of Lebanon and Iraq, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the President of Moldova, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa. The ceremony commenced with the playing of the national anthems of Cyprus and the European Union, followed by addresses from the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, and President Christodoulides. Greetings were also expected from President Zelenskyy and the Presidents of the European institutions. The highlight of the event was the artistic performance titled “MEMORY-PRESENT-META,” directed by Kostas Silvestros. The performance narrates the history of Cyprus through a combination of music, dance, theatre, imagery, poetry, and digital technologies, showcasing Cypriot culture as an integral part of European culture. Over 100 Cypriot artists and cultural professionals contributed to the multi-faceted work. Following the ceremony, President Christodoulides hosted an official dinner for the heads of delegations at the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia.
