Nicolas Maduro, indicted for $50 million as a narco-terrorist, and his wife are at the center of a crisis following US airstrikes in Venezuela. Maduro, a political heir to Hugo Chavez, took office in 2013, but his electoral victory was contested by the opposition, ushering in a period of political instability. During his rule, Venezuela experienced a deep economic crisis, with severe mismanagement of the oil sector and increasing US sanctions. In 2017, Maduro attempted to expand his presidential powers, bypassing the opposition-controlled National Assembly. In 2018, he secured a new six-year term through elections denounced as illegitimate by the opposition and the international community. In 2020, the Trump administration accused him of “narco-terrorism,” alleging collaboration with FARC in cocaine trafficking to the US. Maduro responded with strong personal attacks against Trump. Washington has intensified pressure on Maduro's regime, while the reward for information leading to his arrest has increased to $50 million. Alongside Maduro is his wife, Celia Adela Flores de Maduro, a lawyer and member of the National Assembly.
