Makarios Hospital on Alert Due to Seasonal Infections in Children

The Pediatric Clinic of Makarios Hospital is recording an increase in cases of seasonal infections, such as influenza and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), especially in young children and infants. The situation is considered manageable, without creating pressure on the clinic's operation, however, the competent services are closely monitoring the developments, as a further increase is expected in the coming days due to seasonality. Currently, one child is hospitalized with RSV and four with influenza A, with comorbidities requiring increased medical monitoring. Unlike previous years, there have been no hospitalizations of children with coronavirus. Dr. Elena Papamichael, director of the Pediatric Clinic, stated that the clinic is on full alert and there is sufficient availability of beds and support from the Intensive Care Units, in case it is needed. At the same time, there is continuous cooperation with the other hospitals of the OKYPY to deal with any increased pressure on the system. Dr. Papamichael emphasized that the current period (January – March) is traditionally accompanied by increased cases of seasonal infections and that this year's levels are comparable to last year. However, a further increase cannot be ruled out, due to factors such as weather conditions and social mobility. The occupancy rate of the ICU at Makarios is around 66%. The medical team recommends that parents emphasize prevention, early medical advice, and responsible behavior when symptoms appear. Vulnerable children have been largely vaccinated against influenza, while basic measures such as avoiding crowding, good ventilation of spaces, personal hygiene, and frequent hand washing remain crucial.
