MEP Kostas Mauridis criticized the EU's High Representative, Josep Borrell, for systematically avoiding reference to the Turkish occupation of territory in Cyprus during a debate on the EU's common foreign and security policy. Mr. Mauridis emphasized the need to defend the EU's external borders and its citizens, citing examples such as Greenland and Cyprus. He argued that the EU's strategic autonomy is now a necessity due to geopolitical conflicts and the disregard for International Law by certain leaders. Ms. Borrell responded that it was not a matter of foreign policy, which was disputed by Mr. Mauridis, who proposed a public discussion. A French colleague expressed her full support and requested an explanation for the position of certain EU officials. Mr. Mauridis accused some European officials of prioritizing their national interests over the protection of the EU Treaties.
