Mazotos Community Council Calls for Revocation of Desalination Plant Decision

The Mazotos Community Council is calling for the immediate revocation or suspension of the decision to establish a mobile desalination plant in the area. The request is based on a scientific study that highlights the presence of priority habitats, such as Posidonia oceanica meadows and reefs, which are protected by European directives. The location of desalination plants near these habitats carries the risk of irreversible degradation. The Community Council argues that the Mazotos area is not suitable for the installation of desalination plants under the current conditions and calls for a comprehensive and independent environmental impact assessment, as well as the evaluation of alternative solutions. In addition, it is requested that compliance with the procedures prescribed by national and European legislation be ensured. While acknowledging the water problem, the Community Council emphasizes that hasty and arbitrary decisions are unacceptable and that documented studies, transparency, and social consensus are required. To this end, a letter has been sent to the President of the Republic, the Ministers of Interior and Agriculture, the President of the Larnaca Provincial Self-Government Organization, the parliamentary parties, and the District Officer of Larnaca. As a sign of protest, the Mazotos Community Council has scheduled an event for next Saturday at 10:00 am near the gas station in Mazotos.
