Greens Condemn Cypriot Presidency for Bypassing European Parliament on Mercosur Deal

The Greens in the European Parliament have accused the Cypriot Presidency of the European Council of bypassing the legislative process regarding the EU-Mercosur agreement. They specifically criticize the provisional application of the trade aspect of the agreement before the European Parliament's vote in February. A majority of member states voted in favor of the agreement on January 9th, allowing the European Commission to proceed with the official ceremony in Paraguay. The Greens argue that this decision violates a framework agreement between European institutions and the principle of sincere cooperation. Furthermore, they express concern about the lack of effective measures to protect European farmers from competition from Mercosur products, as well as the reduction in the budget of the Common Agricultural Policy. Green negotiator Saskia Bricmont described the vote as a disregard for farmers and European democracy, emphasizing that the cost of the agreement will fall on taxpayers. The Greens/European Free Alliance group is calling on the President of the European Parliament, the Chairman of the International Trade Committee, and the European Commission to express their disapproval of the actions of the Cypriot Presidency. The EU-Mercosur agreement has sparked controversy in Europe, with concerns raised about environmental impacts, competition for European farmers, and a lack of transparency in the negotiation process. The Greens are among the most vocal critics of the agreement, arguing that it does not take into account the concerns of citizens and farmers.
